Batter Up

We finally had our first softball game of the season! Evelyn couldn't wait to get there and cheer for her Daddy. And Cheer she did, for every player no matter what team. It was a great first game, we won of course and there are many more game nights ahead.
Go Daddy GO whoo-hoo!!! Her favorite part of the game is at the end when all the DAddy's come get their kiddo's and they all get to run the bases -so cute!

A Bit of Dirt

This might not look like much in the picture, but this is a garden spot that Gramma Claire has been working by hand for quite some time, turning the soil and working compost into it to prepare it for blueberries. Every time Evelyn was with her she would be out there too and the two of them would plan together what they would plant. A few weekends ago, Gramma bought 4 bushes from a farmer in Canby and Evelyn came with us. We brought them home and Evelyn helped put them into the ground. We also planted a tomato, zucchinis, and pumpkins. Evelyn and Gramma have been planning their pumpkin patch since last year and great hopes rest on those little seeds. The garden is right alongside the driveway so now every time we get out of the car at Gramma's Evelyn exclaims, "oh! My patch!" She doesn't call it the garden, she calls it her patch. And her patch is looking fine.

For those of you so concerned, Evelyn now has a kid sized kool. She wanted the one that was her size, and her color. She was tickled pink to bring it over to Gramma's house and couldn't wait to tell her we bought it from the K-Wallmart Store....

We are so happy to have warm, sunny garden growing weather we hardly know what to do with ourselves. Bring on the Summer!!!

Scout: A Pretty Boy He Is Not

Blog Catch UP Day! I have been away from the ol' blog for a couple weeks in part because I could not find the USB cord for our camera and thus couldn't download any of the pictures to go along with our goings on. So now that I have a cord again I am looking through the pictures and playing catch up. I try to limit my number of posts per day... but it's good to be back. :)

Some of you may have been wondering, how is ol' Scout? (Stout as Evelyn will tell you) ...and some of you could care less about the big ol mutt but I will tell you he is doing just fine. He is well taken care of by our Evelyn who has discovered what a wonderful prop he is for her imagination. Ever since Evelyn fell and got stitches in her ear, Scout has been the lucky recipient of care in the, "I am the veterinarian and you are my patient" game. Evelyn plays this game most often in the presence of Daddy while I am work but I have been lucky enough to bear witness once or twice. It goes like this: Evelyn enters the room and introduces herself, "Hello my name is Doctor Jeanne (her pediatricians name). What seems to be the matter wif Stout today?" And we tell the Doctor with most sincere concern that we are worried Scout might have a problem with various doggy ailments such as his ear being sore, his tummy being upset, or hot spots. Then after listening intently Evelyn says, "well let me take a look." And she gets down and holds Scouts ear back and puts her whole hand in his ear practically and either gives him stitches or medicine to wash out the itchies and when she is done she says, "wait right here I'll go get him his medicine" and returns with an imaginary bottle. Then she tells Daddy it's his turn to be the doctor and she gets to be the concerned doggy owner and they repeat the same script, over and over and over. Scout lets her dig in his ear every time, wondering if he is going to be OK, since everyone is clearly worried about his health.

In this picture, Scout was made to lay still while Evelyn painted his toenails with water colors. She chose a nice emerald green for him. Poor Scout was a little less willing to sit still for this.

SCOUT~ 1 : small possum living under our house~O
yes, it's true. Scout put his first notch in his belt this month after battling it out with a possum he came out victorious. EEEWWWW! I'm glad I wasn't home for this one, Thank You Andy for having the fore site to take a picture of the pre-battle stand-off.

Yes, you may wear your tutu

I've mentioned before that Evelyn got a tutu for Christmas and for her birthday she got a ballerina kit. It has only been recently that she has been actively seeking the two out. So when she took her "ballet lessons" one Saturday morning and then wanted to wear her tutu out when Gramma came to pick us up I just couldn't say no. She wore her tutu the whole afternoon.
When ever she sees someone dancing, she says "I wish I could dance like dat." She has said this about people dancing ballet, hip hop, Indi, and square dance it doesn't matter as long as a person can move to the beat. She tries too, she thrusts her leg in an awkward angel behind her and puts her arms out to the side with her tongue sticking out as well because she is concentrating so hard. Sometimes she hums a little hum, but you can see that in her mind, she is the most graceful of dancers.

Spring time in Oregon

These pictures are from several weeks ago when we went to the Rhododenron Garden. This year wasn't as spectacular as in some years past but we still were able to enjoy the giant flowering trees. We also had the luck of coming across a mama duck and her brood. They are so sweet, one can never see too many baby ducklings.

It happened just like this....

There was a string of events that lead to us finding Evelyn like this....

Without a stitch of clothing on, sitting in my bucket out in the front yard.

She told me after church that she wanted to go swimming tonight and I brushed her off because we don't have a wading pool yet.

She was playing in her turtle sand box and got sand in her new water shoes.

I brought out my utility bucket and told her she could wash her shoes because they are her new "water" shoes and it doesn't matter if they get wet.

Next after deciding her feet needed to be washed as well I found her missing the bottom half of her clothes having had a "little accident" (standing in warm-ish water will do that to you).

I washed out the bucket, refilled it and was inside getting her a fresh outfit when I came back outside and found her "swimming" in my utility bucket. Evelyn still calls a swimming pool a "kool". She invited both Andy and I to jump into her "bucket kool" several times, insisting that it was really fun. She said "I'm swimming in my kool Mom!"

We need to buy the poor child a wading pool....she won't fit in the bucket forever!

Too much Pollyanna?

So I was thinking this morning that at least the smell of skunk and death has run the sugar ants out of the house and I was glad about that....

What do you think? Is that too much Pollyanna?

What we think has happened now is the poor animal that was originally sprayed crawled back under our house and died. Because now it smells faintly of skunk (which is an oxymoron because the smell of skunk is never faint) and death or hot garbage.... but (and again with the Pollyanna) it's only in the front corner of the living room and not in our bedrooms.

AND at least we don't have ants right now! :)

ok, I will say it. I am 30, but I am loved.

My table runeth over! I have the most beautiful flowers in my house right now! I was given orange tiger lily's from my Mom for my birthday, my team leader at work gave me 30 columbines from her garden, Andy and Evelyn surprised me with a bouquet of white tulips for Mother's Day and I have three mason jars CRAMMED full of bluebells each one brought to me in triumph by Evelyn, "Here Mom! I brought you flowers!" And me? I am just as surprised and thankful with every handful she brings me as I was with the one before. So my table runeth over but so does my heart!

I have been DREADING my birthday this year, turning the big 3-0. Thirty, I am thirty years old. No more excuses. When you're in your 20's you're still young, still learning. But when you are in your THIRTIES? there are no excuses. As I was telling my Mom and sister at the zoo, Jesus was only 33 when he became our savior. 33 is only 3 years older than I am right now! Not that I am operating on that scale, but still as you can see I have been struggling with turning over another decade.
However, I have had the most wonderful birthday this year. My team at work was amazing, I had cupcake parties with all my little groups of kids who were told by their teacher Cindy that I was turning 3, my team leader called and sang me happy birthday on my voicemail, all my programs co-ordinators sent me a signed personal card, my team brought me 30 Columbines, 30 Twizzlers, 30 M&M's...... and it goes on.
My Mom had us over for dinner the night of my birthday and my dear friend Julie, who watches Evelyn, helped make a chocolate cake from scratch. After Julie suggested to Evelyn she make Mommy a card, Evelyn suggested to Julie, "how about we make Mommy a cake!" And Julie couldn't resist. Evelyn told me "HAPPY BIRFDAY MOMMY!" and threw her arms around me about 300 times after I got to Gramma Claires. She handed me each present that was waiting for me on the coffee table and told me, "you can't open dem yet Mommy you have to wait, do want to see? let me show you!"
So I am getting used to the idea of being "in my thirties" slowly but surely and it really doesn't matter at all to my Evelyn or anyone else what "number" I am.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY 2009
Evelyn is growing, so are her skills with scissors. I was Evelyn's Sunday school teacher for second service on Mother's Day and we had all the kids trace their hands and make "flowers" for their Mommy's. Evelyn snipped the finger tips off of her right hand before we realized she wasn't snipping the green "grass" as she was supposed to.

Mother's Day Weekend

We had a great weekend for Mother's Day. Marita came up on Saturday morning and we ate lunch and packed a snack and went up to the zoo. It was a beautiful day here in Portland and so naturally the zoo was packed and the parking lots all had CLOSED signs posted on gates. We were hopeful because it was later in the afternoon and a lot of people were leaving and so we interpreted the orange cones and huge CLOSED signs as merely a suggestion and we had the easiest time parking at the zoo in a long time, despite the closed signs.
Evelyn picked out a new zoo hat and wore it pulled down over eyes so far she could only see the ground in front of her. It was a good thing she was holding onto one of our hands at all times. There were lots of people but the nice thing about the zoo is that you can still find sections without massive crowds, or if you just wait long enough the crowds move on...

We had the greatest surprise when we went to see the elephants. The zoo keepers had just entered the yard and all the elephants fell into line and grabbed onto the tail in front of them. We got to see Elephants on Parade! Little baby Sammy walked next to his mom and the zoo keeper held on tight to his tail so he would get used to it. The zoo volunteer said they were getting their afternoon exercise so around and around they went.

After the zoo we took Evelyn back home to Daddy and then the three of us got to go out and have dinner. We also made a trip out to IKEA. It was fun to hang out together and had a great day.

AFRICA?

Every day Evelyn says something and I WISH I could remember all of them but here are a couple that stuck:

Daddy~ "Come here cutie, are you my cutie?"

Evelyn~ "Dad.... I'm not a cutie, a cutie is an orange! I'm a girl."

While looking at Evelyn after she said something exordinary that has now escaped me I said, "Evelyn, where do you even come from?"

Evelyn~ " I fink I come from Africa."

Spring Happenings

It's Spring, the flowers are blooming, the weeds are popping, and the skunks are spraying. So we have spent the last week living with Gramma Claire and Andy has been diligently airing out the house and washing laundry. He got rid of the skunk smell, our house still doesn't smell like our old house but it doesn't send us running the other way. Mostly, it smells like a pot of cleaning supplies.
Evelyn is happy to be home, but loved the time she got to spend at Gramma's house. We made a new discovery while living there, home made PIZZA! The recipe for the dough could not get any easier, and if you need proof- I made a pizza by MYSELF with Evelyn and didn't screw it up!
We have made it 4 times now since last Saturday, at Evelyn's request, and each pie tastes totally different. Mom has had this baking stone for years and never really knew what could be done with it. She has been getting to know some people at her job and one of the teachers was telling her all the things that you can do with this stone. Pizza is one of the easiest things in the world to make on this stone. We have made it with red sauce, white sauce, BBQ chicken, Italian sausage, asparagus, yellow and green peppers...... it's been really fun. And it's a much tastier way to eat left overs than casserole.
Thank You Mom for letting us take over your house for a week, and for all the pizza! And for letting me sleep in while you played with Evelyn :)
