One for the scrap book

First Stitches-Saturday night while at a friends house for a soup party.

Evelyn hadn't had a nap today and was not steady on her feet. She and one of her little friends bumped into each other and both went down, Evelyn just happened to go down right into the edge of a sharp coffee table with her left ear. It was a big owie. We took her to the ER and she was given 5 stitches.

I could stop the story there and you'd have all the facts but Evelyn has said SO MANY sweet little things in the midst of all this that I have to write it down. Plus, I think I'm still full of adrenaline. So, here is my highly detailed, adrenaline filled account of tonight....

Evelyn did the best she could to forget about her owie quickly.
~She started saying, "No thank you" every time I tried to look at it.
~Then she took deep breaths and said, "I love you Mom." She said that a lot-about broke my heart.
~deep breath, "I'm all done"
~Then at one point when she was starting to cry again she said, "I'm laughing" and tried to switch over from crying to laughing.

We had to take her into the ER just to make sure she didn't need stitches and it needed to be cleaned. My friend Julie drove us there in our car so I could sit with Evelyn- Thank you Jules! Poor Andy had not come to the soup party because he wasn't feeling good so he called Gramma Claire who gave him a ride and he met us just as we were being called back. Nice driving Gramma! Way to break the speed barrier.
Evelyn was such a champ. She REALLY, REALLY didn't want to be there and kept telling us she just "want to go home now" (again:HEART BREAKING!!!) ALL the doctors and nurses could tell which room the 2 year old was in for a while, because they could hear her screaming, but then she called down. Once the nurses had cleaned it up they could see Evelyn would need stitches, she had a good sized gash (they called it a laceration) along the top curve of her ear (OUCH!)
In order to keep a 2 year old from thrashing and escaping any one's grasp they had to put Evelyn in what they called the "Papoose" It is a board with wide Velcro straps that wrap tightly around the shoulders, waist, and legs so Evelyn couldn't move a muscle. We got Evelyn all secured and she was crying and then emptied her stomach all over the table, poor baby! As the male nurse un-did her Velcro straps to get her cleaned up Evelyn said,
"Thank you Doctor, are we done now?"

Once we got her cleaned up she felt much better and we put her in the "blanket" again. She really didn't mind having her arms strapped tightly to her sides and legs tied together. SHe was SO calm! We sang baby Beluga, the ABC's (she sang a few letters with us), and Baa Baa Black sheep and they were done, Evelyn almost fell asleep while they were putting her stitches in! The doctor and nurses couldn't believe how good she did. She got 5 stitches.
When they were done,
Evelyn kept saying "Thank you doctor." "My ear is all dry now."
On our way out to the car Evelyn said, "Dat was a GooD Doctor Mom, Dat was a Good doctor Dad."
We didn't get home until almost 10pm and Evelyn was so hungry. She wanted a piece of toast and told me, "an' we can eat it wiv(th) a picnic on da rug." While she was eating her toast, she started talking about the whole ordeal. She felt really bad that she and her friend had had an accident in the first place and we talked about how they had both fallen down but that she got a bonk on the ear. Evelyn also told us that while she was at the hospital, "I was really nervous Dad." And so we were able to talk about that too and reminded her that we had been with her the whole time and that the doctors and nurses really wanted to help her feel better. Then Evelyn said again, "yeah, an' dat was a good doctor." So at least she got that out of it. We told her how proud we were of her for being so brave and she looked at us and said, "I'm not a baby any more, I'm just a big girl." And she is, if she can articulate that depth of emotion, and thank the doctors (totally unprovoked) immediately after she has been sick then she is getting to be a big girl.
What a night, Thank the Lord she was able to get fixed up and is now sleeping heavily in her own little bed. Now that I have de-briefed, I too am ready for bed.
Oh! but one other super cute thing Evelyn did as we were putting her to bed:
Saying her good night prayers Evelyn prayed
"Tank you God for my family,
Tank you God for my Doctors,
Tank you God for my doggies,
Tank you God for Boris and Murial (totally fictitious cats)
an' Tank you God for sheep. Amen." HA! :) I love hearing what she prays for!

Oh no! What a night. Sounds like you have one big brave girl there. Good job Mom and Dad for being brave too. Hope the ear heals fast.

Oh, B...... It is so traumatic for mommy and daddy when their child has a big owie. You did good!!!!! And dear little Evelyn. I'm thankful she didn't get hurt any worse! What an extraordinary little girl! Have you calmed down enough to cry through your anxiety? Hugs to you all.

First of all..Carrie, Hello?!! Look what time you wrote? You must have a sick babe, too!?

Yes, I put the peddle to the metal. All I had to hear was, ER, and blah blah blah, and I'm pretty sure I hung up on Andy and took off.
Any time I hear about a bonk to the head area, I go into super alertness for the child. That's nothing to take lightly.
What a baby angel! I just love her so much!
Brigetta, if you find out what the physiological reasons for twinges in the legs, butt, and stomach are, when I am faced with an owie or blood and guts, please forward them to me.
xoxo mom

Poor baby! Tell Evelyn that her cousins are very upset for her! We have yet to experience stitches at our house so they are a very big deal! I hope that you all are going to get some sleep and feel better soon! hang in there!

Oh! That sounds awful. I loved hearing all the Evelynisms, though. What a trooper! And yes, she is sounding like such a big, grown-up girl. You must be so proud of her.
